Recommended: Adjust TCR for stainless steel to 0.0125Smoktech is on fire. They are producing some of the best tanks and mods in the business. ECCR’s Smok T-Priv review will go over the details of a new kit that pairs the T-Priv 220 TC mod with the incredibly popular TFV8 Big Baby Beast tank. The T-Priv mod is a new 220 watt device that is powered by two 18650 batteries. It features a full suite of current vaping options as well as a stylistic design complete with showy LED lighting.
The new T-Priv mod should not be confused with the Smok G-Priv mod. The G-Priv is a touch screen device that also goes to 220 watts and has most of the same vaping features. The T-Priv has the stylistic design with futuristic looking side cut-outs that light up. Like other Smok mods, the T-Priv is firmware upgradeable. We rate this as a major plus because you will be able to access new vaping technology as it becomes available.
The T-Priv has a top screen design more like the Smok H-Priv mod. In terms of size, the T-Priv is in the ballpark of the other Smok dual 18650 devices. It is perhaps slightly less wide but thicker. The end result is that in conjunction with the texture offered by the design cutouts on the side, the Smok T-Priv 220 is very comfortable and stable when held. Like its predecessors, the T-Priv fire bar is fantastic. That’s our intro now into the meat and potatoes of our Smok T-Priv mod kit review.
Who Is The Smok T-Priv Vape Kit For?
Vaping has become such a broad category that there is no one size fits all product. So whenever I do a vape mod review I don’t want to waste anyone’s time so I like to talk about who would like a certain product. That way you know right away if it is something may be are interested in. Before I get into the details of the Smok T-Priv review, I want to do the same thing.
So who would enjoy the Smok T-Priv vape kit? This is a sub ohm vape mod capable of temp control. It can be vaped at very high wattages or at lower wattages. I think that it might not be the best choice for someone brand new to vaping. If you are brand new check out our vaping for beginners guide. But, if you want more vapor. If you are ready for sub ohm or TC vaping. Then The T-Priv is an affordable kit from one of the world’s premiere manufacturers. The T-Priv kit will be of interest to a very large number of vapers.
In my opinion, the T-Priv paired with the TFV8 Baby Beast is pretty close to a one size fits all vape device. This is a very diverse kit. You can enjoy everyday vaping at 50 watts making plenty of vapor or crank it all the way up to 140 watts or more and get into some pretty huge clouds. The range you get from the mod paired with the range offered by Baby Beast coils makes the T-Priv kit a diverse, affordable combo. $72.95 for an authentic version with free shipping included. The T-Priv kit will check a lot of boxes for a lot of vapers.
Smok T-Priv Kit Review With TFV8 Big Baby
Our Smok T-Priv kit review includes a look at the TFV8 Baby Beast that comes with the mod. They pair perfectly by the way. The overall price of the kit is $72.95 and you are going to get a lot with that. This is an excellent value kit and by the end of this vape review I will make that case. I won’t spend too much time on the tank because I want to focus on the T-Priv mod.
You can see the specs on both the mod and the tank in the image above. Actually, you will see two versions of the Big Baby. You can see the 5 ml tank and the 2 ml tank. The 5 ml tank is the one you will get in the Unites States, Canada, Mexico, Australia etc. The 2 ml tank is the one that you will get in Europe. The reason is that in Europe there is a 2 ml limit on tank or cartridge capacities.
The TFV8 Big Baby is a smaller version of the Smok TFV8. You can see our Smok TFV8 Cloud Beast review here. The TFV8 Big Baby is a spectacular tank. One of the best. One of the coils that you will get with the kit is an 8 headed coil. Yes and octuple coil! You will also get a dual core coil so you can try them both when you get your kit. One of the beautiful things about the Baby Beast coils is the gigantic range you can vape them at. You can keep it low and easy or crank it up.
The TFV8 tanks have been our for over a year now. They are truly proven performers. Tried tested and true. There’s no doubt that with the Smok T-Priv kit you are getting one of the best vape tanks in the business. The tank and mod will be color coordinated as well. Just saying.
Smok T-Priv Review
We can get rolling with our Smok T-Priv review by talking about what it does! It is a 220 watt mod with variable wattage control from 6 watts up to 220 watts. DJLsb vapes has confirmed that the T-Priv device will indeed reach 220 watts with fully charged high drain 18650 batteries. For example Sony VTC4 batteries will deliver you that high power output. Of course once the batteries are weakened in charge it may only reach 200 watts. Overall, it is very impressive that it legitimately reaches 220. Very good performance for any dual 18650.
The vaping options include variable power and temperature control. In temp control the options are Ni (nickel), SS (stainless steel), and Ti (titanium). You can adjust TCR value for each coil material as well. We’ll have a tip for you on that later in our Smok T-Priv review.
You will also have the option of customizing the intensity of the hit with each vape. You can choose from hard, normal or soft. For example in ‘hard’ mode the first 2 seconds of the fire will be at a higher wattage before stepping down to the wattage that you have dialed in. In ‘normal’ mode there is a level power output. For a softer initial hit ‘soft’ mode will have a slightly lower wattage for the first 2 seconds before stepping up to the wattage that you have set.
All of these options contribute to a thumbs up for our ECCR Smok T-Priv mod review. The thing that makes it work and ties it together is that it is easy to access these features. These customizing options are easy to use and adjust even on the go.
Using The Smok T-Priv Mod
Using the Smok T-Priv mod and TFV8 Baby Beast is pretty easy. To tunr on the mod you click the fire button 5 times. Pretty standard. To access the menu system you can click the fire bar three times. Then use the left and right buttons to scroll through the options. In variable power mode you can select from 6 watts to 220 watts. The wattage increases in 0.1 watt increments but if you hold down the left or right button for a second that will increase to 1 watt increments for faster scrolling. Good.
When you go into temp control settings, the first option you have is to adjust the wattage. You don;t need to as the default wattage will work fine. But you do have the option and you can experiment and customize at your leisure. In temperature control mode the increments are 10 degrees on Fahrenheit and 5 degrees in Celsius. The temperature control range is from 200 F to 600 F or 100 C to 315 C. In temperature control you can choose from nickel coil wire, stainless steel or titanium.
When you choose which coil wire you are using, the next step will be the option to adjust the TCR setting. Normally, the right TCR setting will already be in place so you don’t need to change anything. But if you are vaping in stainless steel mode you will get a better, more stable temp control performance by adjusting the TCR to 0.0125. Now I found the temp control to be stable, accurate and enjoyable. This minor recommended adjustment comes courtesy DJLSvape oscilloscope testing. So thank you to them for the tip and I am passing it on to you.
Recommended: Adjust TCR for stainless steel to 0.0125
With the TFV8 baby, the coils are Kanthal so you will be vaping in variable wattage. So with the baby Beast coils you don’t have to worry about temperature control. But if you like temp control and want to use an appropriate atomizer, the T-Priv delivers a smooth TC vaping performance.
Other T-Priv Mod Menu Options
Other T-priv menu options include the power off option. You do need to go into the menu to power down. That’s a consistent Smoktech feature. Once powered down 5 clicks of the power bar will turn the T-Priv mod back on. Once the mod is turned on, five clicks will lock the device. I recommend locking the device when transporting or if you have it in a pocket.
You will have the option of changing contrast and orientation. There is a puff counter and regulator. You will see your option to download software upgrades. You can have free access to Smoktech mod firmware upgrades here.
Smok does a great job explaining how to download your T-Priv mod firmware upgrades. We do have a detailed description of the Smok upgrade process in our ECCR X Cube Ultra mod review.
Adjusting The T-Priv LED Display
In the image above, you can see the futuristic cutouts in the body of the mod. Those cutouts make for a nice grip! The cutouts also display lighting patterns that you can customize in the menu. Above you can see red and blue lights emitted. In addition to red and blue you can choose green, yellow, magenta, cyan, white and rainbow. A final color option labelled “RGB” is an option that scrolls through all colors.
There are a variety of light options. Choose “FADE” and he lights will come on and slowly fade. “NORMAL” and the lights will activate consistently as commanded. Finally “JUMP” will get you some flashing lights. If your mod detects any errors it will blink red.
When do these lights come on? That’s up to you. They can be on all the time. They can turn on only when you vape, when the screen is on or you can shut them off altogether.
I don’t think it is a good idea to have them on all the time. Why drain the battery like that? During the Smok T-Priv review when I did use the lights I had them come on every time I vaped. It was actually kind of cool. I admit that after a while I simply turned them off. If I was going out or in a crowd, maybe I would turn them back on as a conversation starter or…just to show off. Why not!
Customize The Firing Profile (Vaping Mode)
Smok has designed three options to customize the firing profile on the T-Priv. You can choose from HARD, NORMAL or SOFT. These options apply to both temperature control vaping modes and variable wattage mode. In NORMAL mode, you simply get the power or temperature setting that you have dialed in.
In HARD mode, the first 2 seconds of the fire will be at a higher output. This is for vapers who like a hard initial hit that winds down after a couple seconds. In vaping for the Smok T-Priv review, I used HARD and NORMAL because they suit my vaping style. By the way, there is a menu shortcut that lets you easily change from HARD to NORMAL or to Soft. I’ll get to that in the next section.
Anyway, obviously, in SOFT mode the first 2 seconds of the atomizer fire are at a lower power than you have selected. That’s for a soft initial hit that increases in vapor after a couple seconds. That’s it for that.
T-Priv Menu Shortcut
The T-Priv menu shortcut is a feature that really like. Clicking three times and scrolling through the menu is no big deal but it’s nice to have a shortcut. In my opinion it adds to ease of use. Anytime you add to ease of use I feel like a product gains a broader appeal from a larger cross section of vapers.
What are the two features that you would want the quickest and easiest access to? You would want quick access to the power setting and quick access to the vaping mode. That’s exactly what the menu shortcuts are.
In variable wattage, if you squeeze the fire bar and hold down the right button at the same time, you will access the vaping mode option. You can easily change from NORMAL to HARD or SOFT on the fly. If you hold the fire bar and left button at the same time, you can adjust the wattage.
The same processes apply when you are vaping in temperature control. Quick and easy.
Quick Review Of TFV8 Big Baby
As I have mentioned, the TFV8 Big Baby Beast is an ultra popular tank that is a proven commodity in vaping. There are five different TFV8 coil options available. They are the T8 0.15 ohm 8 headed coil, the X4 0.15 ohm quad coil, Q2 0.4 ohm dual coil, the M2 0.15 ohm and the M2 0.25 ohm coils. So that’s a very good selection. These coils are nice, big and easy to work with.
With the T-Priv starter kit you get the Q2 dual core and the T8 octuple core coil. The Q2 can be vaped at anywhere from 30 watts to 100 watts and the T8 anywhere from 50 watts to 110 watts. So a 70 watt range and 60 watt range respectively.
The Big Baby has a top fill design and a heat resistant Delrin drip tip. Refills are quick and clean. There is a large number of colors available. The TFV8 Baby you get with your T-Priv kit will be color coordinated with the mod. You will also get an extra glass tank. You will be getting one the the best vape tanks in the business with your T-Priv kit.
Vaping The Smok T-Priv Mod
Vaping the Smok T-Prov mod is a pleasure. The device is very fast, very responsive. The time from fire bar to vapor production is virtually instant. There is certainly no noticeable lag. During the Smok T-Prov review, I would frequently adjust wattage and mode. Very quick especially with the menu shortcut.
The comfort from the cutouts gave an excellent feel and excellent grip. The build quality is fantastic. There are no loose pieces. I was especially impressed with the fire bar. It has no play at all. It is very well built. The battery door is very stable and reliable.
The 510 is very nice. A spring loaded design with anti-corrosive. Even better the 510 is slightly recessed in relation to the top screen. That means no leaks getting onto the screen.
If you like the look of the T-Priv I have very good news. The finish is durable and it will last. I had a few drops and knocks and there was no scratch. The quality of the paint used in the finish is exceptionally good. The Smok T-Priv checks all the boxes for quality. Most important, the vaping is fantastic and spot on satisfying.
Using Other Atomizers With The T-Priv
In testing a variety of tanks for the Smok T-Priv review, I could not wait to try out my Smok TFV12 Cloud King. I also tried the regular TFV8, the Cleito and the Lychee to test the temp control. Also the very underrated Smok Minos. In order to test a ceramic tank I experimented with the Halo Jag 6. The T-Priv brought out great vaping from each atomizer that I tried. A testament to the overall quality and the 510. Any tank with a base of 25 mm or smaller will fit and work beautifully. In fact, this brings me to a major plus for the T-Priv.
The Smok H-Priv was one of the best mods that we tested in 2016. It is still available and you can get one here with free shopping. The H-Priv is one of the fathers of some of the features on the T-Priv including the intuitive fire bar and the top screen. Here’s a difference. The top screen of the H-Piv was flush with the 510 connection. On the T-Priv, the top screen is elevated slightly. That is so that if any e-liquid leaks it will not get into the screen. So the elevated screen is a plus and shows that Smok is always improving design…even the little things.
The T-Priv will have some overhang with atomizers with diameters larger that 26 mm. They will still work but there will be overhang. The T-Priv works best with atomizers with diameters of 25 mm or less.
