This is exciting. We had to do a Smok TFV8 review because this is something we have been waiting for. It is now here and Smok is calling it the Cloud Beast. It comes with three coils, an extra glass tank, extra gasket for the top fill port, vape bands and spare O-rings. The TFV8 tank follows up of the TFV4 vape tank that was and remains a wildly popular choice for vapers. Is the TFV8 and improvement? We will get into all of that but to give you a hint, the answer is yes. This latest offering from Smok is something special.
One thing that jumped out at us instantly as we were preparing this Smok TFV8 review was three words. Those eye popping words are “octuple head coils”. Yes, eight coils in one atomizer. This is getting wild. Imagine how much vapor 8 coils heads will produce. Cloud Beast indeed. The eight coils are made up of four fused Clapton coils, hence the total of eight. These are very large and super long lasting coils. In fact, the longest lasting coils I have ever used.
The Smok TFV8 is exceptionally well made and designed. As mentioned earlier, the TFV8 follows in the footsteps of the TFV4 tank. You know, at ECCR when we cover all of the best quality vape products, we sometimes have to make a subjective judgment. Most often we get it right when talking about the best ecigs, best ejuices etc. Of course there are always folks who write in and disagree and yes, there is room for subjectivity of course. But, when we covered the best vape tanks of 2016 we named the Smok TFV4 as the best. The vast majority of feedback we had was in complete agreement. Naming the TFV4 the best vape tank of 2016 was the closest thing to consensus that we have ever experienced. And that is saying something because passions run high in our community of vapers!
With such a proven track record of sheer excellence, it is with true excitement that we greeted the announcement of the new Smok TFV8 tank being released. Now that I have experienced it and tested it, the expectations have been met and even exceeded. Our Smok TFV8 review led us to conclude that we have a new sheriff in town and the TFV8 is is actually the newly crowned best subohm tank of 2016. You could win cloud competitions with this thing. You can also push your vaping to the limits. It is impeccably built, top performing and versatile.
Smok TFV8 Review
The Smok TVF8 is a large vape tank! It stands in at 50 mm, or almost two inches so that is not overly large but it is the way that the diameter space is utilized that gives it that ‘big’ ability. It has a 24.5 mm diameter, or .96 inches, and the diameter of the glass tank is 25.5 mm, or slightly over 1 inch. It weighs in at 74 grams or 2.6 ounces. The eliquid capacity is 6 ml. It is a stainless steel construction with very large adjustable airflow ports. by the way, the coils also have massive airflow intakes.
In comparison to the TFV4, the TFV8 tank is slightly shorter but has a 15% larger diameter and a 30% larger overall area. The top fill juice slot is also larger on the TFV8 which is something that I like very much. Not all ejuices come with needle tips so a larger juice fill port means less mess and less waste.
- Larger juice fill port than TFV4
- 15% larger diameter
- 30% larger overall area
- More airflow
- Delrin drip tip
- Size matters! More capacity, more airflow and capable of higher power settings.
Of course, not breaking any ground in our Smok TFV8 review, but the number eight in the name of this tank comes from the fact that it does work with pre-built 8 headed coils. The V8 reference has an automotive context and Smok has carried on with that by calling their TFV8 coils – “turbo engines”. That brings us to another beautiful thing. We know factually and with certainty that Smok coils are brilliant performers with amazing durability. That means more vaping for you between coil replacements.
I can’t scientifically explain what specifically makes the TFV8 coils last longer, but perhaps it is the sheer size of them? The larger surface areas perhaps better withstand the heating in addition to the obvious design quality and using the best materials. These are the longest lasting coils that I have ever experienced.
Top Fill Vape Tank
The Smok TFV8 vape tank is a top fill design and has something new called ‘turbo boosted bottom air slots’. It also has a turbo boosted drip tip and heating air tube. They say a picture is worth a thousand words so here is an image of the TFV8 airflow to help describe what I am talking about.
As you can see, there is a lot of air movement through this tank. The airflow is also silent with no weird whistling or noises. Everything is beautifully smooth in typical Smok fashion. You can see how large the airflow ports are on the bottom of the tank and at the base of the atomizer coils. The additional top airflow will help cool the vapor as it unleashes through the drip tip as the airflow is condensed and then expanded as draw from the 9mm bore drip tip. When you get yours, you will notice that the Delrin drip tip has a narrower diameter at the base gradually expanding toward the top.
Imagine how much vapor you are going to get with all of the airflow being drawn through 8, count’em, 8 coil heads. Physics alone tells us that the vapor is going to be huge.
What You Get With The Smok TFV8 Vape Tank
I got the standard TFV8 vape tank kit for the Smok TFV8 review and it comes with three coil options so you can try a variety of vaping options right out of the box. You will also get vape bands, a replacement glass tube, RBA, user manual and spare parts. Lets sum that list up in point form:
- 1 Smok TFV8 Cloud Beast Tank
- Heat resistant Delrin drip tip
- 1 V8 – T8 Octuple eight head 0.15 ohm coil
- 1 V8 – Q4 quadruple coil head with 0.15 ohm resistance
- 1 V8 Turbo RBA head comes with 0.28 ohm coil installed
- Extra glass tank
- Organic cotton for your RBA head
- Spare parts and vape bands
- User manual
For my Smok TFV8 review, I was very interested in the RBA head. I am generally not a builder, typically I build just for the purposes of reviews. I have to say that the Smok TFV8 RBA is so beautifully well designed. It is going to be one of the easier RBA heads to build on. Not only easy but fun. I am absolutely going to be building on the TFV8 RBA head. It is relatively easy to build a coil that will let you push your vaping to the hairy edges of 180 watts or even more.
The RBA head that you get with the TFV8 kit comes with pre-installed Claptons. I would say that all you have to do is put in your cotton and you are good to go but not so fast. I was eager to just wick and vape for the Smok TFV8 review but you do need to do the due diligence of prepping and testing the coils. Install the RBA into the TFV8 tank base and then remove the RBA cap. Screw the base of the tank onto your mod and test fire. If certain parts of the coil glow and others don’t you will have to form it a bit. They will probably need a little shaping before they are ready to vape. So have your ceramic tweezers handy and make sure that the coils light evenly. A few pinches and rakes are all the you need.
When you see that the coils are good to go, you are ready to add your cotton wick, after you let it cool of course. Now, one of the first things I noticed testing the RBA for the TFV8 review was that the ejuice channels are huge. You can have a larger amount of protruding cotton than you are used to. So when you trim it, leave more than you typically would and then tuck it into the channels. Prime your wick, put on the RBA cap, attach the top of the tank and enjoy the massive vapor.
If you have a powerful mod, for example like a Smok H-Priv 220 watt mod, it is probably not to often you actually push that mod to higher levels unless you are a sophisticated coil builder. That is about to change because some of the pre-built coil options that you can get with the Smok TFV8 Cloud Beast will let you push your vaping to high-performance boundaries like no other vape tank. We’ve gone into the RBA a bit so let’s take a closer look at the pre-built TFV8 vape coils.
Smok TFV8 Cloud Beast Coils
Smok TFV8 Cloud Beast coils feature a patented ‘turbo’ design that bring the airflow, vapor and flavor to a whole new level. Digging up details for the Smok TFV8 review, I found out that Cloud Beast coils will be designated “V8”. For example, the V8-T8 coil is an octuple head with 0.15 atomizer resistance that can operate as high as 260 watts! yah, wow. Maybe I will be needing that Smok Koopor Primus 300 watt mod after all! The V8-T8 works and vapes best at 120 watts to 180 watts but you can push farther it if you want to.
The V8-T6 coil is 0.2 ohm resistance and vapes best in the 110 watt to 150 watt range. The V8-Q4 vapes best in the 90 watt to 150 watt territory. So, you can really get the most out of an advanced powerful vape mod like the Primus or perhaps the Sigelei 213 213 watt mod. You have to love the coil options and as always you know that authentic Smok vape coils are impeccable quality and very long lasting. Not to mention total high performance.
I was just glancing back through my Smok TFV8 review and I know that I have already mentioned the longevity of these coils but I am doing so again. Seriously, these are truly long-lasting coils and you are going to notice the difference. The V8-T8 and V8-Q4 both vape amazing. When you get your kit you can see which turbo coil most floats your boat. I have a suspicion that the T8-V8 coils are going to be your choice. They are so versatile. It’s like having a Maserati, most of the time you drive for practical purposes of going from A to B. But, if you want to blow your hair back, the Maserati can do that, too! T8-V8 coils are the same thing. Beautiful flavorful vaping at 50 to 100 watts, but when you want to let it fly, you can.
I personally know many people who used to be avid coil builders who now vape pre-built coils from Smok. If you are someone who feels like you have to build your own coils in order to get the vapor you want, the TFV8 Cloud Beast coils may be just what the vape doctor ordered. I am not saying you will give up coil building, but you may find yourself amazed for the first time at the performance of pre-built coils. Hey, you can still build but you just might enjoy the occasional break from building to focus on the sheer enjoyment of vaping.
Patented Vape Coil Technology
While TFV8 Cloud Beast V8 coils are patented, it is a sure bet that companies that are making fakes and clones will not be hindered by intellectual property rights. There are hundreds of ecig factories in China and many of them do nothing but make clones from the cheapest materials that they can get their hands on.
I also want to mention in the Smok TFV8 review that the tank itself will be cloned and sold to distributors and, well, anyone who wants to buy them to turn a quick profit by undercutting authentic product. Direct Vapor is a certified Smok vendor and they also have free shipping and a low price guarantee. You will always get authentic vaping gear from Direct Vapor. You can choose from two different colors and the price is only $38. If you buy from elsewhere, make sure to check the Smok authenticity code to see if yours is authentic.
If it turns out that you have a cloned TFV8 Cloud Beast tank, or if it turns out the cheap deal on coils you got were actually clones, please do not use either the fake tank or coils at the same specifications for an authentic TFV8. If you vape a clone at high wattages, there is just a lot that can go wrong so, like they say, don’t go there! Honestly, just avoid the whole mess by buying from a certified Smok vendor like Direct Vapor.
Vaping With The Smok TFV8
We mentioned the recommended power ranges in the Smok TFV8 review but you can go outside of the ranges if you dare! For example with the V8-T8 octuple coils, which are the fused Claptons, you can go as high as 260 watts. Once I even went to 300 using the Koopor Primus. How was it? It was wild! The vapor at 300 watts hits like a house. It is a pretty hot vapor though and I don’t think you will want to go there. In terms of vaping, it’s not practical.
When I vaped at 260 watts for the TFV8 review testing, I found the vapor was insanely massive, more than I have ever experienced before. If I was in a cloud contest with some friends, I am not in the class of the real cloud competitors, I would use the 260 watts max as recommended. It is always a good idea to stay within the recommended ranges. For practical purposes, that is for a very nice, crisp and flavorful vape, the TFV8 performs phenomenally well even at 50 to 80 watts.
TFV8 Can Take Your Vaping To New Levels
That’s the versatility. The Cloud Beast tank can be tame or beastly but it always performs as directed. The enormous range of power compatibility is amazing. If you vape at a high wattage, say 180 watts for example, when you scale it back to 70 or 80 watts you will notice the vapor seems lighter. It is going to be tempting to vape at higher wattages with the Cloud Beast because it is a blast. For that reason, I don’t think you should use an ejuice with a nicotine level over 3 mg.
When vaping at the TFV8 in high performance, high power modes you will make a lot of vapor and go through a lot of juice. You are not going to need 6 mg of nicotine. The vapor you are going to get is incredible and with the stainless steel coils, my favorite, the vapor is clean and crisp and the flavor really pops. It vapes amazing and that’s definitively stated.
I’ll end the Smok TFV8 review here for now! There are virtually no cons, I can’t think of one except maybe I wouldn’t mind an MTL coil but at the end of the day the TFV8 is a high performance tank so a MTL coil doesn’t really fit the purpose. The list of pros is massive. The TFV8 Cloud Beast is a magnificent vape that pushes vaping enjoyment to another level. Impeccable quality materials, precision machining and brilliant performance. It looks amazing, too. Beautiful inside and out.
The TFV8 Cloud Beast has arrived! You can order yours now.
